Commemoration of the Battle of the Somme 1916
Amiens, June 6-10, 2016 The four days will be devoted to the first centennial of the Battle of the Somme. We will focus on the consequences brought about by the shock produced on the peoples of the main protagonists on the French battlefield : the United Kingdom, France and Germany. As a matter of fact their troops faced one another on July 1st 1916 which happened to be a watershed for the United Kingdom and its Empire. WW1 “Christmas Truce” in photos
To commemorate 100 years since the incredible Christmas Truce, The Open University have searched through the IWM archives to find examples showing the impact of football during WW1. December 2014 marks 100 years since the “Christmas Truce” of World War 1. The truce, an unofficial ceasefire between British and German troops, saw soldiers venture into no-man’s land where they “walk[ed] about together all day giving each other cigars and singing songs” according a newly discovered letter written by General Walter Congreve, to his wife on Christmas day 1914. WW1 Photographs in Colour
2014 marks 100 years since the beginning of World War 1. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of war, The Open University has enlisted the help of a photograph restoration expert, to ‘colourise’ some of the unique and interesting photos that were taken during the time. Although the original images were only available in black and white, colour has been added retrospectively to help bring them to life.
