Sama was born in Basra, Iraq and is now Assistant Professor of Photography, University of Arizona, Tucson. In her Between Two Rivers photography project, Sama inscribes the war violence of Iraq on her own body. By using her own body she draws our attention to the destruction and reconstruction of Iraq and its people. Sama believes this process to be a more just depiction of suffering which challenges how we interpret and retell stories of war and trauma.
